I think the slow-motion brow mopping action makes him look quite heroic.

We set a humane rat trap near our chicken run and caught this little fellow - of the genus Rattus Outoffocus. We released him in some woods near by.
If he comes back, it’s a long drive to Cranbrook woods for him.

Half a large squash or one medium butternut squash - cut into 2cm cubes
3 thick slices of peeled ginger
one small onion, finely chopped
one medium potato, chopped
2 bay leaves
1 litre of veg stock
120mls of milk.
Gently fry the onion and the ginger for 5 minutes or so
Add the potato and squash and bay leaves - stir around for a minute
Add stock, stir
Cook for 45 minutes or until the squash and potato is completely soft
Remove from the heat, hunt out the ginger slices and the bay leaves - feed them to the compost.
Blend the soup using some kind of mechanical contrivance
Add the milk, season and heat up ready to serve.
Put in bowls and garnish with chopped chives and eat with loads of crusty bread.

This is the best and easiest to use Flickr tool I have ever seen.
You follow this link, drag the suggested bookmarklet onto your links toolbar and it’s done. Then whenever you upload a Flickr photo (if you can be arsed) you click the link and it turns your photo into a mini google map. Click the place on the map where you took the photo and it automatically geo-tags your image and inserts a link into the description field.
I realise that as I am typing this I am making it sound complicated - it isn’t. Start geotagging!

Well, the big pile of mushrooms (minus the many maggoty ones) was duly turned into soup, using one of Hugh Fernley’s recipes. It was delicious, and as an added bonus, neither Debra or I are feeling very poisoned yet.

Went out for a quick walk in my local wood. I certainly wasn’t expecting this amount of mushrooms, especially after the frosts.
I am especially looking forward to eating the deceivers, which I think will join the parasols and puffballs in a mushroom soup.

Well, it seems that there are three types of mushrooms.
Ones that you can eat, ones that will kill you and ones that you can eat but may give you ‘gastric problems’.
The books are unclear as to what constitutes gastric problems. However in the interests of scientific discovery I cooked and ate some Clouded Agaric mushrooms (clitocybe nebularis below)
They tasted great, and so far I have yet to develop and serious digestive problems. So horah!

One of the good things about this house is the larder - I feel that I have done my best to put as many things in jars as I can for the winter months. The squash crop has been a bit disappointing - only two green ones (can’t remember what they were) and one butternut.
Maybe there will be a couple more before the weather gets two cold, but at the moment they seem to be getting to about 10cm and then rotting off.
