Going postal

Sad though this story undoubtedly is, it does at least confirm that the saying “Going postal” - meaning to go mad in you place of work - is never to far from being re-vitalised with yet another act of gun related employee disgruntlement.

Read the story here.

Sleeping Creatures

I was browsing Flickr again and came across this bloke.

I think he may have issues with death. Either that or his parents never told him were little Tiddles went once he ‘fell asleep’.

Spooky

This a picture of the allotment on Sunday.

On Saturday, having uploaded a picture of my newly laid out potatoes (well I find it exciting) I searched Flickr for photos tagged with the word allotment and was a confronted with picture of the allotment I have a plot on, but from a different angle.

This proves one of two things:
1) The world is shrinking and (as Giles the poster of the aforementioned pictures said) Flickr can be both global and local. Or;
2) We are living in an elaborate Truman Show type setup in which I never really go very far from my home and any memories of foreign travel have been artificially implanted by a benign but manipulative TV producer.

I favour option 2 – option 1 is too unlikely.

Giles’ photos of his allotment can be found at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gilesbooth

Not that interesting… but then you’re not the ones growing them.

Things I miss #1

The first (and possibly last) in a series of obligatory nostalgia pieces.

#1 - Greengrocers who do tricks.

I miss fat greengrocers who throw veg (mainly apples and spuds) into the air and bounce them off their bicepts.

They then put the vegetables into a brown paper bag and do the flippy twisty thing that both closes the bag and adds twists to the corners.

I also just miss brown paper bags. They were so ubiquitous. Now we have to use plastic bags that don’t go bang very well.

I fixed it

fixed

Originally uploaded by exmonkey.

My first attempt at a building a fixed gear road bike.
The frame is horrible, as are the bottom bracket, crank, pedals, bars and brakes.
I’m not overly keen on the chain ring either.

I rode it to work today, my first outing on a fixed gear - took me 45 minutes (about 10 more than normal) and scared me every mile of the way.

I’m quite looking forward to riding home tonight - in the dark, if they can’t see you, they can’t hurt you.

red rubber bands

rubber bands

Originally uploaded by exmonkey.

My new game - best played with two people.
Rules:
1 - First to spot 5 red rubber bands wins
2 - Groups of bands count as one band
3 - Other colours may not be accepted - see advanced rules

Advanced rules:
1 - colour bands may be used for bonuses.
Yellow - deduct one band from your opponants score
Green - worth two
2 - A pile of bands can count as a ‘Band Bonanza’ - a pile of five or more wins the game (much as catching the Goilden Snitch or whatever the thing is called in those Harry potter books to win the game of Quidditch - difference here is that this game can be won by acumulation of points rather than some poorly thought out set of flawed rules to add substance to a series of very weak two dimentional books)

Prize: 5 or more red rubber bands

New years resolution: get more hobbies

So far this year-

  1. Learn the clarinet (again)
  2. Build a fixed gear road bicycle
  3. Grow an exotic vegetable

I think I need 2 more before the end of the first quarter
