Wow - Alexei Sayle is a tosser!

Who’d have thought it?

I never really ‘got’ Alexei’s brand of comedy. I think I was 3 years to young to really enjoy the Young Ones, and his stand up just seemed angry. I always assumed that he’d be a fairly nice bloke - left wing, funny, mellowing with age etc.

However, I have just watched “Mark Lawson Talks to…” - an hour long interview program you watch as a last resort, because, despite a million other channels, it’s the only program that may be watchable. Alexei Sayle spent most of the time telling Lawson how original he is and what shit, fame grabbing, artistically bankrupt people Ben Elton, Reeves & Mortimer, Fry & Laurie and a host of others are.

I felt the whole interview was extremely uncomfortable. Sayle came across as a bitter, jealous man who hasn’t even the good grace to shut up about how disappointed he is that he isn’t as successful as Ben Elton.

What a cock.

Is Ben Elton successful then?

Sure he is, he did that Candle in The Wind song when Diana died.

Benelton also has a successful line of clothing.

I loved Alexei Sayle’s standup at the time - but it was the 80s and I was a teenager. He’s supposed to have written a good book or two as well, but I’ve only read his humorous book ‘Train to Hell’ - it’s slightly chucklesome but not exactly a classic.

Also funny that Hugh Laurie was so nice about Ben Elton on the Fry & Laurie Comic Roots programme - but then maybe he can afford to be as Hugh Laurie is now an international TV star, whereas Alexei Sayle is possibly now best known for a bit-part in Gorky Park and being a humble hack on the Radio Times of all things.

I liked ‘Barcelona Plates’. But I always found his stand up routines a bit scary.

You’re not wrong. I too was expecting something far more cuddly / mellow, but he was astonishingly bitchy and arrogant. Fair enough, Ben Elton’s a bit of a dong these days, but he wrote “Blackadder” and “The Young Ones” - what the heck has Sayle contributed to the comedy canon? All his solo series were rubbish. And you got the feeling that he was slagging Vic and Bob off for no better reason than he doesn’t really understand their humour. Alexei - you should be as modest as your accomplishments.

Mind you, he definitely wins the award for saying “You Know” the most number of times in an hour…

I always found him to be OK - nothing more or less. I was surprised to find, therefore, when I saw him interviewed a year or so ago, that despite being a baldy fat middle aged beardy bloke with (most damningly) a scouse accent, that I was quite attracted to him in a rude way. Mr. Jones wasn’t best suited.
