A cracking example of the how the Yucca has invaded our shores - Eastbourne here, where ancient custom demands a new Yucca be planted everytime another person retires to the coast.

I took a great picture (well it looked great through the view finder) of a yucca in front of Ford open prison yesterday. It is still in the camera so will probably appear on the website in about 8 months. This is the length of time required to:
Finish the film
Lose the film
Find the film and put it in an ‘obvious place’
Find the film again a month later whilst asking youself why you put the film in such a stupid place
Take the film to snappy snaps
Look at a bunch of photo’s you have no memory taking
Upload the only one of interest - which may be the prison yucca. assuming my thumb wasn’t infront of the lens again.
I can’t wait.

Right now, on BBC2 - Gardens Through Time, Diarmuid Gavin is currently talking about 1970s gardens - it seems that this is when ‘architechtural’ plants hit the mainstream… And that means yuccas! There are loads!
We have John Brooks to thank for the introduction of these invaders of our sub-urban environment - that and stepping stones on the grass.

Just been going back through some old Yucca photos and have found these beauties.
Lewsiham yucca and Greenwich yucca are within a 1.5 miles of one another, but the difference could not be more stark. Today’s urban yucca occupies a truely classless position.
I have an excellent photo of a Yapton (Ilex way, West Sussex) rural yucca, but the image file seems to be corrupt. I will attempt to get it rescanned and add it as soon as I can.

Yuccas are alien. The have encroached on our shores in a slow tide of shiny leaved spikiness.
Yuccas originate from southern United States (I am assuming Texas, Arizona etc). They are desert dwelling plants that would normally harbor small dusty rodents and the occasional scorpion, and here, this insidious invader can be seen in the every road, in every town in our fair land.
Yuccas can be found in front gardens, on window ledges, in skips and occupying the centre of many a local parks’ ornamental flowerbed. They are no respecter of income or social position. Yuccas are the alien children of each and every one of us.
In an effort to bring the spread of the urban yucca to the public consciousness, enshrined in this blog, is my ever increasing collection of photo evidence (as and when I get the images scanned!)
